French on the Internet

The project of obtaining indicators of languages in the Internet has been historically fuelled by the support of OIF funding studies to understand the situation of French on the Internet in comparison with other languages. Those studies have fed the chapter about the Internet of the extremely referential book publishes every 4 years by OIF about the situation of French language in the world.

In 2014

The study published in 2019, and which started in 2015, allowed the creation of the new methodology allowing the production of indicators for several languages beyond French and nurtured the Version 1 of that production which has been presented in the conference Language Technologies for All (LT4All), in Paris, UNESCO Headquarters, 5-6 December, 2019 and published in the corresponding Proceedings,  pages 315–319, by the European Language Resources Association (ELRA) : “Indicators of Languages in the Interne”, https://lt4all.elra.info/proceedings/lt4all2019/pdf/2019.lt4all-1.79.pdf 

The study published in 2022 allowed to go from version 2 to version 3 of the methodology and production of indicators which has been presented in the workshop SIGUL2022, part of LREC2022 and published in the  Proceedings of the 1st Annual Meeting of the ELRA/ISCA Special Interest Group on Under-Resourced Languages : “Resource: Indicators on the Presence of Languages ​​in Internet”, https://aclanthology.org/2022.sigul-1.11/

Additionnaly, OIF funded two studies about the production and promotion of francophone open contents which has been respectively published in 2016 and 2018:

Indicators for the Presence of Languages in the Internet

In 2017, we devised a new approach that could help to better follow the progress and prevalence of languages online. Using this approach, we were able to identify meaningful indicators outlining the presence of 343 languages on the Internet.
