DISPARITION OF ADAMA SAMASSEKOU
An essential figure in the fight for linguistic diversity has just disappeared: Adama Samassekou, the President of MAAYA, the World Network for Linguistic Diversity, but also the leader of numerous civil society structures that you can learn from this announcement (in French) from the Pan-African Federalist Movement or this declaration from the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences.
Adama has been an inspiration for many of us, from the World Summit for the Information Society, where he embodied a civil society ahead of its time, to the MAAYA network, where he gave body and soul to linguistic diversity, he marked our path with his own blend of humanism, intellectual height, and benevolent humor, all within the simplicity, humility and nobility of a pious man and supportive, always listening to others. For me, he will remain the eternal and paternal face of a fight for diversity with the weapons of the spirit.

Joseph Mariani, CNRS/France : Deux jours après la Journée Internationale de la Langue Maternelle, nous avons perdu un grand défenseur de la diversité linguistique, un important promoteur des langues africaines et un ami.
Viola Krebs, ICV/Suisse : C’est avec émotion que j’ai appris le départ d’Adama Samassékou. Je l’ai connu dans le cadre de la première phase du Sommet Mondial sur la Société de l’Information (SMSI) en 2003. Nous avons réalisé nombre de projets ensemble, l’initiation de Maaya, des conférences, des publications. Il était le président de la Fédération ICVolontaires…. Cher Adama, Tu nous as marqué avec ton courage, ton éloquence, ta persévérance, ta bienveillance, ton humanitude. Tu as inspiré de nombreuses personnes dans le monde entier. Tu nous manqueras. Que tu puisses reposer en paix et que ton âme soit lumineuse comme tu l’as été lorsque tu étais parmi nous.
Dan Wagner, Penn University/US: Adama Samassekou was indeed a man of many talents, blessed with a deep appreciation of human culture and human diversity. We met often over the years, and he visited us at the University of Pennsylvania about two decades ago, where had a major impact — showing our students and faculty how to broaden views of the African continent and its heterogeneity. He was a major figure, and a model for many with his grace, charm and wit. He will be missed.

Since the first time I communicated with him, I realized how important the mother tongue is for us. I will never forget his strong leadership and politeness in every discussion.
Yoshiki Mikami, Language Observatory/Japan: I had the privilege of encountering his remarkable personality and insights for the first time at the WSIS held in Tunis. Subsequently, whether in Bamako, Addis Ababa, on the ship along the Rena River in Russia, or at the UNESCO headquarter in Paris, I had the opportunity to appreciate his charm on multiple occasions. It was a great honor and a cherished memory for me when he visited Tokyo with his wife and interacted with my family.
Anuradha Kanniganti, INALCO/France : C’est une grande perte pour notre communauté, il a toujours été là en retrait comme un grand humaniste, pédagogue et combattant pour la cause des langues, toujours éloquent et chaleureux dans la défense des grands enjeux et des valeurs. En 2014, lors de la réunion du Groupe de travail au siège de l’UNESCO, après quelques discussions sur les risques encourus même par les « grandes langues », il a défendu l’idée d’un Atlas des langues du monde et pas seulement des langues en danger (il est devenu plus tard l’Atlas mondial des langues).
Il avait un merveilleux sourire expansif et une joie de vivre qu’il répandait autour de lui.

Et comme on dit chez moi KOO KPEEN LOO DJIR BAA. Le Grand Fromager est tombé et s’est mis à travers le marigot
Comme l’eau qu’il retient symboliquement, ce sont ses savoirs et ses enseignements qui restent, nous avons la mission d’approfondir et continuer.

Shindouk Mohamed Lamine, Chef de tribu/Mali : Au nom de toute ma Tribu, de ma famille et en mon nom propre, je présente toutes mes condoléances après la disparition de notre président Monsieur Samassekou, que j’appelle affectueusement l’homme de la Venise malienne. Aujourd’hui on perd un Grand homme humble, simple, sympathique, intelligent, sincère et véridique; un homme d’État, un politicien avisé, un administrateur chevronné, un homme de lettres, un compatriote et un ami. Repose en paix “Hammadi”.
